My recovery was long and painful and I was left with permanent damage to my vision. Throughout the process I hoped that the soldier who shot me would be held responsible and that the army would be forced to compensate me. Instead, the soldier was not prosecuted. When I sued the Ministry of Defense, the judge decided that not only will I not be compensated, but I that I would be forced to pay for the cost of the trial. The end result is that for the pleasure of being shot by the army, I am required to pay approximately 100,000 shekels -- or about $29,000.
I have taken my case to the Israeli Supreme Court with the hope of overturning the lower court's decision. I am asking for your help in paying the outstanding court expenses and the additional costs of litigating the case. il mio nome è Matan Kohen. Quattro anni fa ho partecipato ad una manifestazione nel villggio palestinese di Beit Sira. Mi sono unito alla abitanti del villaggio che stavano protestando contro la costruzione del muro di separazione israeliano sulle loro terre. Ogni volta che loro uscivano per protestare erano assaliti dall’esercito israeliano. I soldati ci hanno picchiato, arrestato, sparato ma gli abitanti del villaggio si rifiutarono di cedere nella loro lotta . E’ stato nel corso di una di queste manifestazioni il 24 febbraio 2006 che un poliziotto di confine mi ha sparato colpendomi all’ occhio sinistro con un proiettile di plastica . Il mio ricovero in ospedale è stato lungo e pieno di dolore ed è rimasto un danno permanente alla mia vista Nel corso di tutto il processo, sperai che il soldato che mi aveva colpito fosse riconosciuto colpevole e che l’esercito lo costringesse a risarcismi. Invece il soldato non fu perseguito. Quando ho citato in giudizio il Minstero della difesa il giudice ha sentenziato che non solo non sarei stato risarcito ma che avrei dovuto pagare le spese processuali. Il risultato finale è stato che per il piacere di essere diventato bersaglio dell’esercito mi è stato richiesto di pagare approssitavamente 100.000 shekels oppure circa 29.000 dollari Ho fatto ricorso alla Corte suprema di Israele con la speranza che questa potesse roveciare la sentenza emessa dal tribunale di grado inferiore.
